Jessica is Biking to End Duchenne
Please support me as I participate with the Race to End Duchenne team at the 2020 TD Five Boro Bike Tour on May 3, 2020. Together, we will go the distance to end Duchenne.
Duchenne is the most common fatal genetic disorder among children. It's a muscle-wasting disease that begins with a weakening in the pelvic muscles, over-time sees muscles in the legs, arms and torso fail. Ultimately, heart and lung complications can lead to death before age 30.
To date, there is no cure or treatment to stop the progression of Duchenne. It has touched our family, cutting short the life of my husband Peter Gimbel and of my brother-in-law Tommy Gimbel.
Peter & Tommy were extraordinary in their achievements - both attended college and graduate school, both had jobs focused on helping others in the community, and did extensive volunteer work. Tommy wrote a lengthy autobiography about disability and theology, relying upon a mouth-fueled mouse as hand weakness made it impossible for him to type. Peter was an outlier among men with Duchenne as he started his own family, and we had a daughter. Unfortunately, Tommy died in July 2016, at age 31, and Pete a few months later at age 33. Just think of what they could have accomplished given a few more years.
Please help us put an end to the devastating disorder by making a donation.
